Statement: WASPI decision

I am deeply disappointed by the decision to reject the
Ombudsman's recommendations for compensating the
women affected by the WASPI injustice.

I joined the WASPI women in calling for fair and fast
compensation, and I stand by that.

It is true that we must repair our public finances after years of
Tory mismanagement.

However, I am clear that we should do so by raising taxes on
wealthy individuals and corporations, rather than failing to
compensate working women for an injustice that all can see.

Immediately after the announcement, I urgently met with the
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to make this case in
the strongest possible terms.

This decision is wrong and I urge the Government to reconsider.
